ADT did three conspicuous things this quarter: kept revenue roughly flat, plugged in an acquisition, and repurchased stock, and its cash balance dropped to a very small $3.9 million.
On the surface the operating story is ordinary: revenue was $1.3B, operating income eased to $315.9M and margins ticked down to 24.1%. The needle that moved here is liquidity, not sales.
"Cash Flows from Investing Activities The increase in net cash used in investing activities, as compared to the prior year period, was primarily due to: outflows of $164 million related to the Origin AI Acquisition in the current year, partially offset by a decrease in dealer generated customer accounts and bulk account purchases of $92 million primarily due to higher bulk account purchases during 2025, and a decrease in subscriber system assets expenditures of $40 million primarily due to our continued transition to an outright sales model."

That paragraph explains the biggest headline: ADT spent $164 million on Origin AI this period. That significantly reduced the company's cash, which finished the quarter at $3.9 million.
"Cash Flows from Financing Activities The increase in net cash used in financing activities, as compared to the prior period, was primarily due to: higher share repurchases of $105 million and a reduction in net borrowings on long-term debt of $77 million..."

Management also used cash to buy stock and to change its debt mix, which together represented additional cash outflows beyond the acquisition. Those financing choices matter because ADT's cash cushion became very small.
"Six Months Ended June 30, (in thousands) 2026 2025 $ Change Net cash provided by (used in): Operating activities $ 1,304,454 $ 1,030,525 $ 273,929 ... The increase in net cash provided by operating activities... was primarily due to decrease in cash taxes and interest payments..."

The counterpoint is that operations are producing cash: operating cash provided rose by $273,929 (in thousands) to $1,304,454. ADT’s free cash flow margin is high in the filing, so the business itself is cash-generative. The tension is allocation: profitable operations are funding non-operating uses that have materially lowered the company's cash-on-hand.
Put another way, ADT's balance sheet now combines a tiny cash balance with sizable net debt. The filing shows net debt of $7.3B while the company leaned into an acquisition and $105M of repurchases in the quarter. That makes the company's immediate liquidity posture an important metric to watch alongside top-line growth.
A helpful historical note: ADT's operating margin has been in the mid-20s for several years, so the current modest margin dip sits against a track record of relatively stable operating profitability. Management has funded deals and buybacks in part from operating cash, but that does not remove the near-term arithmetic of the cash line.
Next quarter, the single concrete figure to compare is the cash balance ADT reports, and whether operating cash flow or financing actions replenish the $3.9 million reported.
