C3.ai spent less, sold less, and still finished the three months with positive operating cash flow.
Revenue fell 25.5% year over year to $52.4 million in the three months ended July 31. Gross profit dropped faster, down 37% to $16.7 million, pulling gross margin down to 31.8% from 37.6%. The business shrank, and the costs did not shrink quite fast enough to protect the margin.
The cash line is the filing's counterweight. Operating cash flow improved from negative $33.5 million to positive $2.1 million, while capital spending fell from $760,000 to $8,000. Cash rose to $136.4 million, though the filing does not tie that increase to one operating cause.
Management points to a smaller cost base across the income statement. The company cut research and development expense by 28%, lowered sales and marketing expense, and reduced subscription cost of revenue by 16%.
C3.ai's explanation for the subscription-cost decline is specific:
"The decrease in cost of subscription revenue for the three months ended July 31, 2026 compared to the same period last year was primarily due to lower payroll and contractor costs of $5.2 million and lower data center costs of $1.5 million."
C3.ai, 10-Q, September 9, 2026.
That is a cost reset, not evidence of expanding demand. Subscription revenue declined more than subscription costs, which is why subscription margin fell despite the savings.
Sales and marketing also came down through headcount and advertising reductions:
"The decrease in sales and marketing expense for the three months ended July 31, 2026 compared to the same period last year was primarily due to lower payroll costs of $18.0 million as a result of reduction in headcount and lower advertising costs of $2.2 million."
C3.ai, 10-Q, September 9, 2026.
The result was a smaller operating loss in dollars, from $124.8 million to $98.3 million, but a wider operating loss relative to revenue. Operating margin moved from negative 177.7% to negative 187.6%. A company can lose fewer dollars and still look less efficient on each dollar it sells. Accounting has a talent for making both statements true.
The balance sheet adds another layer. Diluted shares rose 14.5% to 155.0 million, while stock compensation amounted to 113.1% of revenue on the comparable-period calculation. The cash improvement arrived alongside a materially larger share base.
C3.ai's annual trajectory makes the reset harder to miss: revenue reached $389.1 million in fiscal 2025 before falling to $250.3 million in fiscal 2026. The latest three-month report shows lower payroll, cloud, advertising, and capital spending while revenue continues to contract.
The number to carry into C3.ai's next quarterly report is operating cash flow, with $2.1 million as the current starting point.
